Sea Lions and Dolphins Guard Sub Base
Surprisingly, the local Florida/Georgia TIMES-UNION had a cover story on the mission of sea lions and dolphins serving as “elite defense” at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base.
Surprising because I thought it was a classified program.
Nevertheless, the story went on to say that a number of patrol boats patrol the waters around Kings Bay but if an underwater intruder elude a patrol boat’s sophisticated electronic surveillance, something else awaits in the depths that Navy officials say cannot be fooled.
These sturdy creatures are part of a Swimmer Interdiction Security System, according to the TIMES-UNION.
I would take this to mean anytime some form of electronic security device is alerted to something “Fishy” in the waters around Kings Bay, one of the mammals is sent to mark a target, according to the project manager.
It is not well know that we used dolphins during the Vietnam War in the major ports from Saigon to Da Nang.
These sentries were not trained to “marking an intruder.”
We never lost a major ocean going ship unloading cargo in Vietnam.
Enough said.
